In an examination, 9% of the candidates passed and 46 failed. How many candidates appeared?

That means 91% candidates failed.
Let the total number of candidates be A.
 
Then,
91% of x = 46
This gives x = 50.549
Number of candidates cannot be in decimal.
It will be either 50 or 51.
