Let one of the candidate received (defeated team) = x votes
 → number of votes received by other candidate = x + 12,000 (won the election)
Total number of votes = 2x + 12,000
 
According to the condition,
begin mathsize 16px style 55 percent sign space of space open parentheses 2 straight x plus 12000 close parentheses space equals space straight x space plus space 12000
rightwards double arrow 55 over 100 cross times 2 open parentheses straight x plus 6000 close parentheses equals space straight x space plus space 12000
rightwards double arrow straight x space equals space 5 comma 4000 end style

Thefore, the defeated team secured 54000 votes.
