Expert Answer:

Before the idea of power sharing was originated, for a long time it was believed that all the power of the government should be given to a single person or a group of people located at a particular place. However, the option wasn’t found to be feasible.  Also over a period of time many notions regarding the power in democracy had changed. Therefore, as the basic principle of democracy it was decided that people should be the source of all the political power. This helped in making sure that due respect was given to diverse groups and the various views that existed in the society. Moreover, everyone was given the right to voice their opinions.

Therefore, it is said that in a democracy, people rule themselves through institutions of self government.
