if the cycloalkanes have general formula- CnH2n which is same as of alkenes, then why are they called saturated?

Expert Answer:

  • CnH2n is the general formula of a straight chain alkene and not of a cyclic alkene.
  • Cycloalkanes have cyclic ring hence it contains 2 hydrogen atoms less than the straight chain alkane.
  • Therefore the general formula of straight chain alkane has the general formula CnH2n+2, while the general formula for cycloalkane is CnH2n.
