To balance a chemical reaction the number of atoms of reactants side =number of atoms of product side
For example
H2 + O2 ? H2O
In this reaction in left side
there are  H= 2  and O =2  But on right side H = 2 ,but O = 1
So to balance O we must add 2 moles on right hand side
H2 + O2 ?2H2O
By doing this now the number of H also increases by 4
So to balance H we add 2 before H2.
So the balanced equation is 2 H2 + O2 ? 2H2O
