How was Delhi different from the three Presidency cities?

answered-by-expert Expert Answer

Before 1857, the conditions in Delhi were in many respects different from those in the three Presidency cities. In Madras, Bombay and Calcutta, the living spaces of Indians and the British were sharply separated. ‘Black’ areas were meant for Indians, and the British limited themselves to the ‘White’ areas. In Delhi, on the other hand, especially in the first half of the 19th century, the British lived along with the wealthier Indians in the Walled City. Many British officials took genuine interest in learning and appreciating Urdu/Persian culture and poetry and also participated in local festivals.
