Expert Answer
Formula used to solve physics problem consists of n variables .
Out of these n variables , we will be given values of (n-1) variables.
we will substitute the values of (n-1) variables in the formula and calculate the value of unknown variable.
Example :-
Let us consider ideal gas equation , P V = n R T
where P is pressure , V is volume , n is number of moles , R is universal gas constant and T is absolute temperature.
Ideal gas equation has 4 variables , pressure P , volume V , number of moles n and absolute temperature T.
R is universal gas constant and its value is known.
Hence out of these four variables , three variables are given .
Hence by substituting values for three variables , fourth unknown variable is calculated .
Suppose the question is
" what is volume occupied by 0.1 mole of nitrogen gas if pressure is 5 atmosphere and temperature is 300 K ? "
We are given , n = 1 , P = 5 atm. = 5 × 1.01 × 105 Pa and T = 300 K
Hence
