how does a saprophyte digest its own food?

Expert Answer
Saprophytes such as fungi and mushroom lack chlorophyll and hence cannot prepare their food. They obtain nutrients from dead and decaying matter. The saprophytes secrete digestive juices on dead and decaying matter and convert it into a solution. They then absorb the nutrients from it. In this way, they digest their own food and derive nutrients from it.
