When the speed of river water decreases on the plains, as it approaches the sea, it breaks into a number of streams called distributaries. The river becomes so slow that it begins to deposit its sediments or load in nearby areas. Each distributary forms its own mouth. The collection of sediments from all the distributaries forms a delta, e.g. Ganga-Brahmaputra delta in India.
