Let from O particles X and Y are projected horizontally with different speeds at time t =0.
horizontal distance xt moved by a particle in time t is given by, xt = u×t ..................(1)
where u is horizontal projection speed.
since the particlehaving charge q and mass m experiences an upward acceleration (qE/m) due to electric field E,
its vertical distance yt = (1/2) a t2 = (1/2) (qE/m) t2 ................(2)
substituting t from eqn.(1), eqn.(2) is rewritten as, yt =[ qE / (2 m u2 ) ] xt2 .................(3)
Hence from eqn.(3) we see that, vertical displacement yt for a given horizontal displacement xt is
(a) directly proportional to charge q, (b) inversely proportional to mass m and (c) inversely proportional to square of projection speed.
From the horizontal range shown in figure given in the question, we can realise that projection speed of Y is greater than that of X.
Hence we can conclude (B) Y has greater mass than X , (C) X has greater charge than Y
