ICSE Class 10 Answered
From the top of the light house , the angles of depression of two ships on the same side of the light house are 60° and 45°. Find the height of the light house , if the distance between the ships is 36 meters. Answer to the nearest meter.

Let h be height of lighthouse. Let the nearest ship be at a distance x from light house .
If the angle of depression of nearest ship is 60o , then we have
hence we get ,

............................. (1)If the angle of depression of farthest ship is 45° , then we have
hence we get,

.............................. (2)From eqn.(1) and eqn.(2) , we get
from above expression , we get x = 49 m
From eqn.(2) , we get height of light house , h = ( 49+36) m = 85 m
