Expert Answer
Leading Indian novelists of the nineteenth century actually wrote for a cause. The British colonial rulers had over the years denigrated Indian culture as being inferior and backward. Therefore, many of the nationalist minded novelists had taken it upon themselves to instill a sense of national pride and a feeling of national belonging among their countrymen. Through their narratives, they also strived to achieve a sense of cultural equality with the British colonizers.
