Below is the activity for the action of steam on metal sampleThe diagram given represents the action of stteam on metal in which glass-wool soaked in water is heated and the steam is passed over the metal kept in the same tube. Hydrogen gas is released by the action of syteam with metal which is collected by downward displacement of water.

Metals react with water and produce metal oxide with the release of hydrogen gas. But all the metals do not react with water.

Metal  +  Water  → Metal Oxide + Hydrogen

For example:

Iron reacts with steam to form iron oxide and hydrogen gas.

The reaction occurs as follows:

3Fe (s) + 4H₂O (g) → Fe₃O₄ (s) + 4H₂ (g)
