Pest Resistance in Transgenic Plants:
- The nematode Meloidogyne incognita infects the roots of tobacco plants and causes a reduction in yield.
- A unique strategy based on RNA interference (RNAi) was designed by Fire and Mello in 1998. This method involves silencing of a specific mRNA.
- Using Agrobacteriumvectors, nematode-specific genes were introduced into the host plant. The introduction of DNA produced both sense and anti-sense RNA in the host cells.
- These two RNAs being complementary to each other formed a dsRNA which initiated RNAi.
- When the mRNA of the parasitewasdestroyed, no protein was synthesised.
- This resultedin the death of the parasitic nematode in the transgenic host.
- In this way, the transgenic plant got itself protected from theparasite.
