A bar magnet when suspended freely with a silk thread comes to rest along the North-South direction of the Earth.

Even if the magnet is turned to some other direction it will always show the North-South direction of the Earth.
The ends of the bar magnet which points North pole of the Earth is called as the North pole of the magnet and which point the South pole of the Earth is called as the South pole of the magnet and this property of pointing the North-South direction is called as the directive property.

The North and South poles are represented by the letters N and S.
