Define refraction of light
Asked by nisharkinnary | 01 Jan, 2020, 03:40: PM
when a light ray travelling in an optically transparent medium makes an oblique incidence on another transparent
medium, direction of propagation of light ray changes at the interface of two media.
This phenomenon is called refraction of light.
Figure shows the refraction taking place in a glass slab, when light eneters from air to glass.
EO is the incident ray travelling in air, OO′ is the refracted ray in glass and O′ H is the emergent ray again travelling in air.
We see that at air-glass interface AB, direction of light ray is changed when light travels from air to glass.
Similarly when light ray travelling from glass to air, we see the change in direction of light ray at interface CD.
This phenomenon is called refraction of light.
