Calculate the electrostatic potential energy for a system of three point charges placed at corners of an equilateral triangle of side 'a'

Expert Answer
Let q0 be the original charge present initially at one of the vertex of equilateral triangle.
To bring the charge q1 at another vertex the required workdone is given by
W1 = q0×q1/(4πε0×a)
To bring the charge q2 at third vertex the required workdone is given by
W2 = [ q0×q2/(4πε0×a) ]+[ q1×q2/(4πε0×a) ]
Total workdone W1+W2 = [1/(4πε0×a)] × [ q0×q1 + q0×q2 + q1×q2 ] Joules
potential energy is same as the workdone W1+W2
