Maximum Range = u2/(2g)  = R   .................(1)

where u is muzzle speed and g is acceleration due to gravity.

if target is at a distance R/2,  then required angle α for getting range R/2 is given by,  ( u2 sin2α ) / (2g)  = R/2 ...............(2)

By comparing eqns.(1) and (2),   sin2α =  sin(180-2α) = (1/2)

Hence (180-2α) = sin-1(1/2) = 30°  or  α = 75°
