Expert Answer
Carbon has 4 valence electrons and can form an octet only through covalent bonding since, it cant lose or gain any electrons and form ionic compound. Hence, it shares its 4 electrons and combines with four carbon atoms or other atoms to form hydrocarbons. This property of carbon is called tetravalency i.e. having 4 valency.
The property of catenation shown by carbon is usually due to tetravalency of carbon atom.
