A wire having radius R melts if it carries a current of 1 ampere what should be the radius of wire of same material if it is to melted while carrying a current of 3 ampere ??

Resistance of a wire is inversely proportional to area or square of radius.
If R is radius, let the resistance be ( k/R2 ) Ω.
Power required to melt the wire when 1 A current is paased = ( k/R2 ) × 1 = ( k/R2 ) Watts .................(1)
Let R1 be the radius of wire of same material and same length and passing current is 3 A.
If this wire of radius R1 melts then required power = ( k/R12 ) ×3×3 Watts = ( k/R12 ) ×9 Watts ...................(2)
powers given by eqn.(1) and eqn.(2) are same. ( k/R12 ) ×9 = ( k/R2 ) or R12 = 9 R2 or R1 = 3R
