A school organized a painting competition.one-fifth of the girls and one-eight of the boy s participated in the competition. what fraction of the total number of students took part in the competition? Sir this is not from any lesson but in general . please answer

The fraction of the girls participated in the competition = 1/5
 
The fraction of the boys participated in the competition = 1/8
 
Let us take the least common multiple of the denominator of the fractions 1/5 and 1/8.
 
40 is the LCM of 8 and 5
 
Thus, the fraction of the girls participated in the competition
And the fraction of the boys participated in the competition
Thus, the fraction of total number of
students participated in the competition
