As shown in figure, let us assume initially man is at a distance l from centre of rod.
By Taking the line passing through centre of rod as reference, if we calculate the centre of mass of combined system
that consists of rod and man, we get centre of mass as [ m (-l) ] / (m+m) = -l/2
If the man making a displacement x in +ve direction, then his position from reference line is -(l-x) .
In order to keep the centre of mass at l/2, the rod will make a displacement -x as shown in figure
so that centre of mass will be [ -m( l-x) + m(-x) ]/(m+m) = l/2
Hence if man moves with velocity u, rod will move with velocity -u .
Hence velocity of man with respect to ground , u-(-u) = 2u
