(a) When a boy strikes an iron pipe, sound is produced. The sound waves travel through air and the pipe. Since speed of sound in iron is greater than the speed of sound in air, so the sound travels faster through iron pipe than air. Hence, another boy hears two sounds, one travelling through iron pipe and the other travelling through the air.
(b) SONAR stands for Sound Navigation and Ranging.
