Expert Answer:

2(x+y)2 - 9(x+y) - 5 = 0
2(x+y)2 - 10(x+y) + (x+y) - 5 = 0
2(x+y)(x+y - 5) + (x+y - 5) = 0
(x + y - 5)(2x + 2y + 1) = 0
i.e. x+y-5 = 0  or  2x+2y+1 = 0
i.e. x + y = 5 ... (i)  or  2x + 2y = -1 ... (ii)
i.e. x + y = 5   or  x + y = -1/2
