1. how can we identify compounds (salts and gases) by their colour and smell ? 2. how can we identify the elements (metals) in a chemical reaction ?

Observe the color and shape of the salts. Ionic compounds formed from the representative elements tend to be white or colorless, while ions of transition elements tend to be colored. If a gas is given off, note the color and odour of the gas. For example: If a brown gas is given off during heating of a salt then it indicates presence of the NO3- ion.
