Yes, in India divisions have been inherent in the working of the democracy. This is can be seen by the way India achieved independence - based on the legacy of the colonial rule that was in the name of caste, religion, language and gender. Also, various internal conflicts in politics divided India after independence. To survive in power many political leaders manipulated democracy to their own whims and fancies.
Thus, the democratic system of government that was adopted therefore shaped the nature of Indian polity in such a manner that contradictions and divisions based on caste, religion, language and gender got segmented in the Indian society.
