Friction is that force which resist the motion when the surface of one object comes into contact with the other.
It is only because of friction that we are able to move around .On running over a  very smooth surface ,the friction opposes the forward force, so that the foot does not slip forward. When we raise our heel again to take another pace, the friction prevents front part of the shoe moving back.
Many everyday activities like walking or gripping  are carried out through friction, and evryone experience the problems that arise when there is too little friction.
In a way it reduces the tendency to slip.
But there are friction that are undesirable opposition to motion, such as between moving parts of machines.
