A complex number z = a + bi, it's complex conjugate z* = a - bi.

Using this statement, we find 

-3 =  x2 + y

and x2y = -4

y = -4/x2

-3 =  x2 -4/x2

x4 + 3x2 -4 = 0

This is a quadratic equation in x2

x2 = [-3 ± (9 + 16)]/2

x2 = [-3 ± 5]/2

Since x has to be real value, x = ±1

and y = -4/x2 = -4
