The Zamindari System in India:
The Zamindari System was a land tenure system prevalent in India during the British colonial period. In this system, the British granted vast amount of land to intermediaries known as zamindars who were responsible for collecting revenue from the peasants working on the land. The zamindars were expected to pay a fixed amount of revenue to the British and were allowed to keep any surplus revenue for themselves. The Permanent Settlement of Bengal was an example of the zamindari system.
The zamindars had the power to snatch away the lands of the peasants if they failed to pay the revenues. Thus, the peasants who had previously the owners of the land were now treated as tenants. This worsened the status of the peasants and as a result several peasant movements were started by the peasants.
