Syed Ahmed Khan was a progressive Muslim leader and took it upon himself to promote Western education among Muslims. To this end, he founded the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College at Aligarh in 1875. The college developed into a notable centre for modern learning for Muslims and later became the Aligarh Muslim University. Syed Ahmad Khan, while promoting modern education, insisted on Muslim cooperation with the British Government. He fought for social reform and advocated the usefulness of Western education. He spoke against polygamy, the purdah system and the pathetic condition of women in the Muslim community.
