The amount of food flowing through the food chain usually drops with each step up the chain, thus giving the characteristic ‘pyramid’ shape to the food pyramid. As per the 10% law, only around 10% of the energy in one trophic level will pass to the next trophic level. This indicates that the loss of energy between trophic levels is rather large. So, a large numbers of primary producers should be followed by smaller numbers of consumers. In general as you go up a food chain, the size of the individuals increases and the number of individuals decreases.
