After the initial gains made by Italy under the Fascist government, many of its negative effects also began to come to surface. The Fascist State made all around efforts to curb political freedom in all forms. After consolidating his power, Mussolini became a dictator and concentrated all the military and civil powers in his own hands. All political parties except the Fascist party were banned, The system of jury was abolished and special courts were set up where the Fascist civilian and military officers were empowered to decide political cases. Press was completely censored, freedom of speech and assembly was curbed and political opponents of Mussolini were mercilessly assassinated.
