Gokhale had gone to South Africa in order to help Gandhiji in his struggle against racial discrimination. In fact, it was Gokhale who persuaded Gandhiji to return to India and join Indian public life. By Gandhiji’s own admission, Gokhale was his ‘political mentor’.
