Though Nehru was profoundly influenced by Western concepts of liberalism and democracy, he did not approve of the military and economic alliances like NATO, CENTO, SEATO, etc. These were initiated by the capitalist bloc led by the USA in order to ‘contain’ Communism. The Communist bloc, in response, had established alliances like the Warsaw Pact, Cominform, Comecon, etc. He opposed all these alliances because he believed that they encouraged colonial and imperialistic tendencies and were likely to kick off a race for armaments.
