If you cannot use and but or so to combine two sentences, use subordinating conjunctions.

In English, there are a lot of subordinating conjunctions. Let's take a look at the most common ones, along with a few examples:

• After – John arrived. We began our meeting. We began our meeting after John arrived.
• Although – It was cold. He went swimming. Although it was cold he went swimming.
• As – We missed the train. We were late. As we were late we missed the train.
• As long as – I will submit the extra papers. I need more time. As long as I get more time I will submit the extra papers.
• Because – We had to cancel the picnic. There was a blizzard in the valley. We had to cancel the picnic because there was a blizzard in the valley.
• Before – I have my coffee in the morning. Then I have breakfast. I have my coffee in the morning before I have my breakfast.
• If – We need to appoint new volunteers. We have to change the way the NGO works. If we have to change the way the NGO works we need to appoint new volunteers.
• Since – I left my countryside farm last summer. I haven’t gone there. I haven’t gone back to my countryside farm since I left last summer.
• Though – She made it to the summit. She had a broken ankle. Though she had a broken ankle she made it to the summit.
• Unless – You need to reach the airport on time. Set the alarm for tomorrow. Unless you set the alarm for tomorrow you will not reach the airport on time.
• When – Mother asked me to boil some water for tea. The doorbell rang. The doorbell when Mother asked me to boil some water for tea.
• Where – This is my ancestral home. I was born here. This is my ancestral home where I was born.
• While – I finished all the chores. The baby was sleeping. I finished all the chores while the baby was sleeping.
