Chemical formula: NaHCO3

It is produced on a large scale by treating cold and concentrated solution of sodium chloride (brine) with ammonia and carbon dioxide.

NaCl     +     H2O  +  CO2  +  NH3     →    NH4Cl        +         NaHCO3

On heating sodium hydrogen carbonate solution, it decomposes to give sodium carbonate with the evolution of carbon dioxide.

2NaHCO3               Na2CO3  + H2O + CO2

•Used as an antacid to remove acidity of the stomach.
•Used in making baking powder which is used in making cakes, breads, etc.
•On heating or mixing baking powder  with water, carbon dioxide is evolved  which causes the breads, cakes, etc. to rise, making them soft and spongy.
•     NaHCO3 + H+  → CO2 + H2O + Sodium salt of acid
•Used in soda-acid fire extinguishers.
