The land tenure system is the way in which land is owned and managed. The legal framework defines the rights and responsibilities of those who own, occupy or use land. In British India, land tenure system defined the way land was owned, managed and the way taxes were collected from the peasants. 
There were three main land tenure systems in the colonial period- the zamindari system, the ryotwari system and Mahalwari system.
