According to the Oxford dictionary, tense refers to a set of forms taken by a verb to indicate the time (and sometimes also the continuance or completeness) of the action in relation to the time of the utterance. Verbs come in three tenses: past, present, and future. The past is used to describe things that have already happened (e.g., earlier in the day, yesterday, last week, three years ago). 

She went to the park to walk her dog. 

The present tense is used to describe things that are happening right now, or things that are continuous. 

She goes to the park to walk her dog. 

The future tense describes things that have yet to happen (e.g., later, tomorrow, next week, next year, three years from now).

She will go to the park to walk her dog.
