By the end of 900 CE, Christianity had become the state religion in almost every European country. Christian monasteries were set up in various European countries and became important centres of learning. Later, the Catholic Church became extremely wealthy and powerful. The priestly class began to favour and propagate religious education which was largely conservative and dogmatic in nature. Ignorance, superstitions and blind faith thus began to spread in society.
