Hi Jacob,

Cavities are often caused due to tooth decay. If one does not maintain cleanliness within the mouth, then it may lead to tooth decay. Tooth decay is caused by germs in the mouth which along with saliva and food form a thin, sticky, transparent film called plaque on the surface of teeth. The acid produced by the germs destroys the enamel (tooth’s surface), thereby invading further into the softer tissues of a tooth, causing cavities.
