What are waves? Describe the structure of a wave.

  1. The rise and fall of the sea surface are called waves.
  2. The structure of waves is:
    • A wave has two curves like structure. The top part of a wave is known as the crest.
    • The lower part of a wave which lies between two crests is known as the trough.
    • The distance between the two consecutive crests and two consecutive troughs is known as the wavelength.
    • Wave period can be defined as the time taken by two consecutive crests to pass any fixed point.
    • The vertical distance between a trough and a crest is called the wave height.
