Expert Answer
The President exercises some discretion in selecting the Prime Minister when no single political party has secured an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha. However, only that person can be appointed as the Prime Minister by the President who can prove the support of some smaller groups or parties in his favour to have a majority in the House.
