Maharashtra Class 10 Answered

The forewheel of a tractor makes 120 revolutions more than the rear wheel in going 730 m. If the diameter of the firewheel is doubled and the diameter of the rear wheel is increased by 1intiger 1/2 times the present diameter, then the forewheel makes 20 revolutions more than the rear wheel in going the same distance Find the circimference of each wheel.

Let Forewheel diameter is d m and rear-wheel diameter is D m.
To cover 730 m, number of revolutions made by forewheel = begin mathsize 12px style fraction numerator 730 over denominator pi d end fraction end style ;
To cover 730 m, number of revolutions made by rear-wheel = begin mathsize 12px style fraction numerator 730 over denominator pi D end fraction end style ;
we are given that,  begin mathsize 12px style fraction numerator 730 over denominator pi d end fraction end style - begin mathsize 12px style fraction numerator 730 over denominator pi D end fraction end style = 120  or begin mathsize 12px style 1 over d space minus space 1 over D equals fraction numerator 120 straight pi over denominator 730 end fraction end style......................(1)
forewheel diameter is doubled, hence changed diameter of forewheel = 2d  m
rear-wheel diameter is changed to 1½ times the initial value, hence changed diameter of rear-wheel = (3/2)D  m

after change, forewheel revolves 20 revolutions more than rear-wheel.
Hence  begin mathsize 12px style fraction numerator 1 over denominator 2 d end fraction space minus space fraction numerator 2 over denominator 3 D end fraction equals fraction numerator 20 straight pi over denominator 730 end fraction end style ....................(2)
By solving (1) and (2), we get begin mathsize 12px style 1 over D space equals space fraction numerator 240 straight pi over denominator 730 end fraction space a n d space 1 over d equals fraction numerator 360 straight pi over denominator 740 end fraction end style
Hence diameter of forewheel  d = begin mathsize 12px style fraction numerator 730 over denominator 360 straight pi end fraction space equals space fraction numerator 2.03 over denominator straight pi end fraction space space m end style  and diameter of rear-wheel  D = begin mathsize 12px style fraction numerator 730 over denominator 240 straight pi end fraction space equals space fraction numerator 3.04 over denominator straight pi end fraction space m end style
Circumference of forewheel = πd = 2.03 m ; Circumference of rear-wheel = πD = 3.04 m
