Expert Answer
Let number of articles purchased = x
cost price of all the articles = Rs. 1200
cost price of each article = ( 1200/x )
since 10 articles are damaged, number of articles sold = (x - 10)
selling price of each article (1200/x ) + 2
selling price of all the articles sold =[ (1200/x) + 2 ](x-10)
profit = [ (1200/x) + 2 ](x-10) - 1200 = Rs.60
By simplifying the above expression, we get, x2 -40x -6000 = 0 ...................(1)
By factorising LHS of eqn.(1), we get (x-100)(x+60) = 0 hence x = 100 is acceptable solution or number of articles purchased is 100
