France and English were two powerful countries in Europe in the early modern period. Their economic and military interests clashed with each other and hence a rivalry developed between England and France. By the 18th century, two major European powers were the English and the French. Both had formed East India Companies to dominate Indian markets. As a result, an intense competition followed. They became arch rivals in trade and this rivalry eventually led to wars.

The Anglo French rivalry in India was played out in the form of three Carnatic Wars. England eventually was able to push the French out of India and gradually became the masters of the land.
