ICSE Class 8 Answered
The British wanted India to supply essential agricultural raw materials to the British industries and wanted it to develop as a big market for the machine made English goods. Thus, they began to destroy the Indian industries.
The British imposed taxes onto the products of the Indian industries entering into Britain and removed taxes and trade duties on the English goods in India. Thus, the machine made English goods became cheaper and people began to buy the English products. This hit the Indian industries hard. It also lost its market in England due to high tariffs placed on its goods. Thus, the Indian industries began to decline.
India started supplying agricultural raw materials to the English factories like indigo, cotton etc.
Thus, the economic policies of Britain transformed India into an agricultural colony.
