A merchant buys sulphuric acid at a certain rate per gallon and after mixing it with water, sells it at the same rate. If the merchant makes a profit of 20%, how many gallons of water is there per gallon of acid?
Solution:-
A merchant makes 20% profit per gallon of acid.
This means, the amount of acid per gallon is 20% less i.e. the amount of pure acid in the gallon = (100 - 20)% = 80%
Therefore, amount of water per gallon is 20% of the total mixture.
Amount of water per gallon = 1/5th of the total mixture.
1/5 = 0.2
Hence, 0.2 gallons of water is present in each gallon of acid.
