Reactor Power (electrical) = 400 MW = 400 × 106 W
 
Electrical energy produced in an hour = 400 × 106 × 3600 J
 
If efficiency is 20%, thermal energy produced in an hour = 400 × 106 × 3600  ×(100/20) = 7.2 × 1012 J
 
loss of mass Δm of uranium to produce above thermal energy is calaculated from E = Δm c2
 
Hence loss of mass Δm in an hour for 400 MW electrical power = 7.2 × 1012 / ( 9 × 1016 ) = 0.8 × 10-4 kg
 
if 0.9 mg is lost for every 1 g of uranium in fission reaction,
then mass m required for 400 MW electrical power per hour is given by
 
m = 0.8 × 10-4 / (0.9 × 10-3) ≈ 9 × 10-2 g
