Figure shows the cartesian coordinate system along with directions of earth.
X-axis in N-S direction and North is in the -ve x-direction.
Falling metal wire in E-W direction , i.e. along y-axis
Velocity vector of falling wire is given by, = - v
Earths Magnetic field = -B
EMF induced in wire = ( v B L )
electrons in the wire are subjected to q( × ) force . Due to the -ve charge of electron, force is in the direction of -ve x-axis
Hence electrons accumlate in west giving -ve potential at west end of wire and +ve potential at east end .
hence direction of emf is east to west
