The Daniell brothers contrasted the image of traditional India with colonial India. They generally painted pictures of the ruins of local buildings built during the medieval period. Through such paintings, they tried to depict remains of ancient and medieval civilisation which were now in ruins. They tried to suggest that the decaying civilisation could develop only under the British rule.

The Daniell brothers painted lively pictures of colonial India depicting grand colonial buildings and new modes of transport. These paintings tried to show the modernising influence of the British rule in India.
